About
Keli Joy Hemingway
LCSW, C-EMDR, CHt
I am a transformational therapist and life coach with 30 years of clinical experience and a proven track record of helping others heal, thrive, and live more fulfilling lives. I’m also the mother of two children and the grandmother of three. I enjoy staying physically active, being in nature, traveling, experiencing different cultures, spending time with my energetic standard poodle, and, of course, spending time with family and friends, which provides support and comfort.
Originally from Massachusetts, I spent my youth studying and competing in ballet and contemporary dance, and also competed as a rifle spinner in the local drum corps. When I wasn’t competing, I spent time either swimming at the lake or enjoying the oceans of Cape Cod, which instilled in me a deep appreciation for nature's healing power.
I later moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia, to escape the New England winters and received a B.S. in Counseling from Old Dominion University in 1996 and a Master of Clinical Social Work (M.S.W.) from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1999.
After completing graduate school, I spent five years in London, England, where I trained extensively in Hypnotherapy for mental health and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Hypnotherapy is a unique approach that I have integrated into my practice and has proven to be a powerful tool for helping clients overcome various mental health challenges. I worked in England for several years as a psychotherapist who specialized in hypnotherapy. While living in England, I had the opportunity to travel throughout Europe and gain an understanding and appreciation of different cultures, both their strengths and struggles.
I sincerely appreciate the complexity of the human experience, which is why I’ve continued to advance my clinical education and gather skills and knowledge in a variety of clinical settings. I’ve worked in settings such as battered women’s shelters, medical and psychiatric hospitals, foster care and adoption, prisons, victims of sexual abuse and violent crimes, juvenile detention centers, community-based outpatient treatment centers, emergency departments, psychiatric crisis services, substance abuse/detox centers, and the homeless population. Working with a variety of populations allowed me to gain experience and insight into the diverse ways people struggle, suffer, heal, and thrive.
My therapeutic approach is empathic, interactive, and accepting, with an appreciation for diversity in culture, thought processes, behaviors, and ethnicity. I present myself as an authentic person, and my communication style is gentle yet direct. I’m goal-focused and strive to help you experience measurable outcomes.
I specialize in working with people who are ready for a better life and who are tired of doing the same things that don’t yield positive results. I primarily work with those who need help managing strong emotions and unhelpful behaviors, victims of childhood and adult trauma, anxiety, PTSD, low self-esteem, bipolar disorder, and depression.
I know your circumstances are unique, and we’ll work together to choose the proper treatment for your goals.
